Yan Chin was born in May 1866 in China and appeared in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census living in Chesterfield, Essex County, New York. Residing at 1 Main Street, Yan was listed as the head of his household and was single at the time of the census. He had immigrated to the United States in 1879 when he was approximately thirteen years old.
At the age of twenty-seven, Yan worked as a laundryman, an occupation commonly associated with Chinese immigrants during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The census recorded that he rented his home and could not read, write, or speak English, reflecting some of the cultural and language barriers many immigrants faced after arriving in America.
Although only a small amount of information survives about Yan Chin’s life, his presence in the census highlights the role Chinese immigrants played in the economic and social fabric of small North Country communities. His story also reflects the broader experiences of immigrants who established lives and businesses despite significant challenges and limited historical recognition.
