Margaret “Maggie” Fauntleroy, the Cornerstone of the First Methodist Church

Margaret Fauntleroy was born in Spartan, Georgia, March 15, 1875 and was the wife of John Fauntleroy. Her nickname was Maggie and she could read and write, but had never attended school.  She came to Plattsburgh when her husband had a job on the boat called Vernon.  Maggie was a servant for private families.  She became a house keeper after the death of her husband. 

Maggie loved children and church.  She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Plattsburgh. She became a full fledge member on July 1, 1917.  Maggie had the first entry under the Personal Mention section of the local newspaper on December 6, 1918. It said, “Mrs. J.C. Fauntleroy of this city is visiting relatives in Atlanta, Ga.” Maggie represented the congregation of the First Methodist Church on Beekman Street in 1957. Learn more
